Jablanac, a village and ferry pier on the coast of the Velebit Channel, in the
back of a deeply indented cove, opposite of the island of Rab. It is located between the coves
of Stara Vlaka and Smokovaca. Stara Vlaka was known as the place from where wood was drawn to the sea, while the cove of Mala Stinica (8-18 m deep) shelters a harbour
with a wharf and a small pier. South of Jablanac is an interesting bay called Zavratnica, a popular tourist destination. The area around Jablanac abounds in banks and
submarine freshwater springs and is therefore the habitat of various fish species (sea basses). Economy is based on farming and fishing. In Jablanac is also the ferry
port for the island of Rab. A regional road connects Jablanac with the Adriatic main road (M2, E65). A local road leads from Jablanac over the Velebit pass Veliki
Alan (1,406 m) and then a regional road to Perusic.
Jablanac was first mentioned in 1179 as a parish centre Ablana. In the 13th century it was a free -royal town. A cape in front of the port features the ruins of a
fortified mediaeval town, founded in 1251 by Viceroy Stjepan Subic. On the cemetery is the church of St. Nicholas, which existed already in 1179. It got its present
aspect in the 16th century and in 1701. The parish church of St. Joseph from the 18th century features sculptures in stucco (Somazzi workshop) and the 19th-century wooden
sculptures by Bartol Devcic. A dry structure descends from the hill of Panas to Velebit - a border between Illyrian tribes of Ortoplines and Begios with an inscription
of Regent Dolabela.
