Vrgada, an island in central
Dalmatia, located southeast of the
island of Pasman; area 3.7 sq km (length 2.1 km, width up to 1.2 km);
population 236. A fertile valley stretches between two parallel chains of low hills. The extreme parts of the valley are under water, forming several coves, Sveti Andrija
in the north-west, Kranje in the south-east; Luka is one of the biggest coves and is surrounded by islets. The island is partly covered with forests (especially in the
north-eastern part). The south-western coast plunges into the sea; on the lower north-eastern coast are smaller bays with sand beaches. The island's only village, Vrgada,
stretches to the Luka bay on the north-eastern coast. Chief occupations are farming, livestock breeding, fishing and tourism. Ferry lines connect Vrgada with
Pakostane.
