In the past, Funtana was famous for freshwater springs. More intensive development
of tourism started in the 1960s, when in the attractive coastal area from Zelena laguna (Green Lagoon) to Valkanela several campsites and a hotel village were built, as
well as numerous rooms and suites in family houses. Today Funtana stretches on both sides of the road
Porec -
Vrsar. The chief occupation is renting of rooms. One of the specific features of the
town is a great number of catering establishments - restaurants, inns, wine cellars, etc. Apart from the rich gastronomic offer, Funtana offers sports and recreational
facilities - for water sports (yachting, diving, water skiing), tennis, football, miniature golf, boccia, bowling, horseback riding, etc. During summer months, Funtana is
able to provide accommodation for about 20,000 tourists. The town was awarded the prize for the best seaside resort on the Adriatic in the category of small places.
Regular events: "Zgor murve" Art Gallery organizes art exhibitions from June to September, presenting another artist each 15 days; art exhibition "Naive Art in
Istria" (in August); the church of St. Bernard organizes summer concerts of singing groups,
choirs, soloists and ensembles performing old and spiritual music; Feast of St. Bernard, patron of Funtana (the first weekend after the 20th of August).
In Valkanela is the Sculpture Park of Dusan Dzamonja. Sculptures, works of this famous Croatian sculptor, are placed in natural environment. There is also Dzamonja's
private gallery, containing his smaller plastics, graphics and drawings.
In the vicinity of Funtana is the village of Flengi, famous for an exquisite Istrian "konoba" (wine cellar offering also fish and other home-made specialities).
FUNTANA, a town in the central part of the western coast of Istria, about 6 km south of Porec; elevation 26 m. It is situated on the low and fertile coast, which
provides many farming opportunities (vineyards, olive-groves, citrus fruits, vegetables, wheat). The ground is covered with a thick layer of red soil which holds water.
The indented low coast with a number of islands is an attractive landscape for the development of tourism. Funtana is located on the regional road Porec - Vrsar. The
parish church of St. Bernard was built in 1621 and reconstructed in 1941. There is also the graveyard church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from 1631 and in the immediate
vicinity the church of St. Lucy from 1750.
